Personalized Learning Pathways & Competency-Based Learning

Throughout our schools and community, our students, parents and community members have heard reference to competency-based learning.  Why as a greater school community are we talking about competency-based learning?  Anyone who has raised or worked with children knows that every child is different; they develop at different rates and have unique ways of learning.  Each one has their own affinities and interests.  Inter-Lakes has a long history of recognizing each learner’s uniqueness.  However, as I hope you know, at Inter-Lakes we are never satisfied to rest on past/current laurels, but rather we are committed to continuous growth, which we like to think of as moving from our Best to our Next

This Next is prompting us to provide all students PK – 12 with greater opportunities for personalized learning pathways that allow them to achieve and demonstrate mastery of our academic and personal competencies.  In order to expand our pathways, we are focusing our efforts on creating:

  • Learning outcomes that emphasize application and creation of knowledge, along with the development of important skills and dispositions;
  • Explicit, measurable, transferable learning objectives that empower students; and
  • Assessment practices that are meaningful and a positive learning experience for students.

The foundational pieces above coupled with building on current classroom and school structures will allow us to increase opportunities so that:

  • Students receive timely, differentiated support based on their individual learning needs; and
  • Students advance upon mastery of the competency and move on when ready.

The Inter-Lakes School District is engaging in a community conversation about potentially shifting administrative responsibilities for the 2018/2019 school year for Inter-Lakes Elementary School and the year after for grades 7 - 12.  The purpose of these proposed shifts is to maximize our resources to provide greater personalized learning pathways for our students.
